De vierde Carbon Pricing Hub bracht vertegenwoordigers van de industrie, het maatschappelijk middenveld, denktanks en de politiek samen om de laatste ins en outs van het emissiehandelssysteem van de Europese Unie (EU ETS) te bespreken.
On the 25th of January, EU politicians, academics, and speakers on behalf of industry, civil society and labour unions came together to discuss the role of the EU ETS in combating the climate crisis. With the EU ETS, the European Commission aims to achieve a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and net-zero emissions by 2050. But is the ETS fit for purpose to achieve this goal? And how can the ETS ensure a just transition for society and the climate?
Uit cijfers gepubliceerd door de Europese Commissie blijkt dat de CO2-uitstoot van de zware industrie (staal, cement, chemie) onder het Europese emissiehandelssysteem vrijwel niet is gedaald sinds 2012. Carbon Market Watch pleit daarom voor een "klimaatakkoord-proof" industriebeleid. Volgens de NGO zijn strategische investeringen en klimaatmaatregelen noodzakelijk om de industrie te verduurzamen.
